How to use your biohazard spill kit.

The GV Health biohazard spill kits have been developed in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive, UK Department of Health and World Health Organisation to ensure best practise procedures and safety when dealing with a biohazard or blood spill.

The MJZ017 and MJZ018 are designed for the following biohazard spills. It is important to remember blood or biohazard spills may contain harmful organisms or viruses that could be transmitted to other patients or personnel if the spill is not decontaminated correctly.

Please note, for acidic spills such as urine and vomit, please use our MJZ004 spill pack or MJZ020 spill kit.

Put on the apron and gloves provided. Face protection is only required if there is a risk of splashing. Unfold the yellow clinical bag and set it up as near to the spill as possible to ensure it is accessible for use during the later steps.

Remove the lid and sprinkle the SoChlor granules over the spill, ensuring it is completely covered as well as absorbing, the SoChlor granules will also start the disinfection process. This provides additional safety benefits over standard absorbents and reduces the cross-contamination risk. Leave granules for a minimum of three minutes.

Fill diluter with cold water to the fill line please. Please check which SoChlor tablet size is provided in your kit. To create a 10,000 ppm solution in one litre, you will need to dilute the correct number of tablets corresponding to your tablet size.

2.5g: You will need to dilute 7 tablets in 1 litre of water
4.5g: You will need to dilute 4 tablets in 1 litre of water.

Tablets should dissolve in three to four minutes. To aid dilution, place lid on the diluter. Do not tighten and gently swirl the diluter until the tablets are fully dissolved. Do not shake. Once the tablets are fully dissolved, tighten the lid and gently invert the diluter twice to ensure the solution is mixed.

Using the scoop and scraper provided, remove the waste material from the site and dispose into the bag. Place scoop and scraper into bag once all material from spill site is removed.

The tablets should now have dissolved in the water. This has created a 10,000 parts per million solution as recommended by the Health and Safety Executive, Department of Health and World Health Organisation. Fully effective against bacteria, spores, mycobacteria, fungi and viruses.

Wet the paper towels provided in the SoChlor 10,000 ppm solution. Use the wetted paper towels to wipe the spill area and any splashes, always wiping in an S-shaped motion. Dispose of used paper towels in the bag provided. Pour remaining solution down sluice or sink with running water.

Be careful not to contaminate handles with gloves. Rinse diluter for reuse. Ensure diluter is put back in kit ready for reuse.

Remove gloves first. Pinch one glove at the wrist without touching the skin of the forearm and peel away from the hand, turning the glove inside out. Hold the removed glove in the gloved hand. Hook the index and middle finger of the bare hand inside the remaining glove, taking care not to touch the outside of the glove.

Pull off the glove, turning it inside out with the first glove inside. Dispose in yellow clinical bag provided.

To remove apron, break the neck loop and waist straps. Avoid touching the outer surface of the apron with your hands. Roll the apron downwards from your chest so the contaminated outer surface is folded inwards. Dispose in yellow clinical bag provided.

Close bag ensuring you do not touch the inside. Tie a knot and place bag into appropriate waste stream in accordance with local regulations. Wash hands thoroughly after procedure is complete. Fill in logging card provided in the kit.
